The Statement of Recognition Act 2023 comes into effect on 1 July 2024.

The Act expands the roles of Aboriginal agencies delivering children and family services, with the goal of reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal children in care in Victoria in a way that is culturally safe and promotes the best interests of the child.

The Act introduces 11 binding principles which are to be considered when child protection staff and community service organisations are making decisions about Aboriginal children and families. These principles strengthen existing approaches to include Aboriginal children and families in decision-making and planning in the best interests for the child.

The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing is hosting a series of online information sessions for community service organisations and Aboriginal funded agencies.

These sessions will cover the legislative changes and help staff to understand how to put the legislation into practice.

To attend one of these sessions, staff will need to register via Eventbrite.

Dates and times for each session are:

  • Wednesday, 12 June: 2:00-2:45pm
  • Friday, 14 June: 2:00-2:45pm
  • Thursday, 20 June: 12:00 – 12:45pm
  • Tuesday, 25 June: 12:00 – 12:45pm

This is initial readiness training and we encourage staff to attend, so you are aware of your legal obligations. Ongoing training and support will be available post 1 July.
