The Department of Education has published updated resources to help families enrol children starting school next year. The department’s enrolment policy supports families that are unable to provide evidence of their permanent residence to access their local school.

School enrolments for 2026 are now open, and parents and carers are being asked to apply for Foundation (Prep) enrolment by Friday 25 July 2025.

The Enrolling in Foundation (Prep) < https://www.vic.gov.au/enrolling-foundation-prep> webpage includes information and resources to help families to enrol in a government primary school. This page includes an enrolment information pack for parents and carers and an application form. A factsheet and poster are also available in more than 40 languages.

School zones for 2026 are available on Find My School <findmyschool.vic.gov.au>. This website allows families to find their designated neighbourhood school (local school) and other nearby government schools.

Every child is guaranteed a place at their local school. Families can also apply to a school that is not their local school, and the child should be enrolled if that school has a place available.

In accordance with the department’s Enrolment policy <https://www2.education.vic.gov.au/pal/enrolment/policy> schools must ensure enrolment practices do not unfairly disadvantage families of children who are unable to provide proof of permanent address because of their individual circumstances. This is particularly relevant to children experiencing homelessness, family violence, children in out-of-home care, children of Defence personnel or recently arrived immigrants or refugees.

If you have any difficulties assisting a family with enrolment, you can contact the Department of Education <https://www.vic.gov.au/contact-us-department-education> and seek advice and support from your regional office.
