Following a recent evaluation, DFFH is working with the family violence sector to update the Mandatory Minimum Qualifications Policy this year. This update will make it easier for people to start working in the specialist family violence sector.

The MMQ Policy outlines the qualifications people must hold or be working towards to work as a specialist family violence practitioner in Victoria.

Based on a recent evaluation of the MMQ Policy, it will be updated to:

  • simplify the minimum qualification to be a relevant Bachelor or above level qualification (including graduate certificates)
  • clarify who the policy applies to and who is exempt
  • make it easier for people to start work without these qualifications and work towards the minimum requirements over time, and
  • address concerns about possible consequences for not complying with this policy

DFFH is also looking at ways to improve education and training options to support people to achieve minimum qualifications, especially for Aboriginal practitioners and people in regional and rural areas.

The current MMQ Policy will remain in place while it is being revised and the updated MMQ Policy will be released in late 2025. More updates will be shared over the coming months.
