The changes include a Statement of Recognition of the impact of past policies on Aboriginal children and families. The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (the department) worked closely with the Aboriginal community and partner organisations to develop and progress the legislation.
In addition to Statement of Recognition, the Act includes other amendments that embed Aboriginal self-determination in our child protection system, including:
- binding principles for decision-making regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
- all 5 elements of the Aboriginal Child Placement Principle
- enabling the Aboriginal Children in Aboriginal Care investigation pilot to progress.
