New amendments to the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Regulations 2017 to expand the scope of practice for registered Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners and health workers in Victoria have come to effect.

These changes enable health practitioners and workers to work to their full scope of practice, including the authorised use of a broader range of medicines. Registered ATSIHPs are now able to obtain, possess, supply, and administer Schedule 2, 3, 4 and 8 medicines, and ATSIHWs are now able to obtain, possess and administer Schedule 2 and 3 medicines.

This important reform supports self‑determination, strengthens culturally safe and community‑led care, and contributes to improved health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Victoria.

The amended Regulations are available on legislation.vic.gov.au, and the associated guidelines can be accessed via Health Practitioners on the Department of Health’s website.
