Legislation changes to the Children and Health Legislation Amendment (Statement of Recognition, Aboriginal Self-Determination and Other Matters) Act 2023 came into effect on 1 July 2024.
The legislation recognises that Aboriginal people are best placed to make decisions and deliver services that protect the best interests of Aboriginal children.
The changes include a Statement of Recognition of the impact of past policies on Aboriginal children and families. The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (the department) worked closely with the Aboriginal community and partner organisations to develop and progress the legislation.
